This Knowledge Base still exists because I kept a copy of it while I worked for the ToolBook department of SumTotal Systems. In fact I'm the one who created the Knowledge Base while I worked there. Since SumTotal Systems will no longer host this resource I've decided to host it myself.
The worst part of ToolBook reaching End Of Life is that it is no longer possible to Activate (with your License Key) a new installation of ToolBook. There is no workaround for this, no way to bypass this requirement for Activation.
A little background information: An installation of ToolBook will function as a 30 day trial (all features enabled), but after 30 days it will refuse to open unless you enter a valid Activation License Key which permanently unlocks it.
If you have an installation of ToolBook on a computer which is already Activated, it will remain Activated, but you will not be able to get it Activated on a new computer.
License Key Activation technology was added to ToolBook starting with ToolBook 9.5. This means this problem affects ToolBook 9.5, 10.0, 10.5, 11.0 as well as 11.5. Only versions of ToolBook older than 9.5 can be successfully installed without the need for an Activation License Key.
So, for example, ToolBook 9.0 can be installed onto a modern 64 bit version of Windows (such as Windows 10 or 11). Of course ToolBook 9.0 does not have all the features of the current 11.5. However it will install and be functional.
There are likely only a handful of people still using ToolBook today, so this Knowledge Base is really here for historical purposes.
Use the Topics, Keywords and Search tabs to find articles about ToolBook. The quickest way to find answers is to use the Search tab, however you'll find that the Topics and Keywords tabs will provide you with a structured way of seeking help.
Several key resources are available:
The most current release of ToolBook is version 11.5. There is a PATCH available for ToolBook 11.5 which will fix several problems which came up after 11.5 was officially released.
You can read more about Patch 4 here:
If you need to reinstall ToolBook 11.5 for any reason, afterward make sure you also download and install Patch 4.
ToolBook products include license activation technology that help prevent unauthorized copying of the software. If you are having a problem activating your ToolBook product, see:
